LIVINGSTON, Ala. — After
posting the program’s best start with eight-straight
wins, the University of West Alabama volleyball team
will open the 2007 home slate on Wednesday, Sept. 5 in
Pruitt Hall against in-state foe Spring Hill College.
Match time is set for 7 p.m. Admission to all home
volleyball matches is free.
UWA returns home after spending the
first two weeks of the season on the road in Augusta,
Ga. and Jefferson City, Tenn. At the Carson Newman
Labor Day Tournament, the Red and White claimed wins
over Tusculum, Mars Hill College, Alderson-Broaddus and
Augusta State University. The Tigers are one of 13
Division II teams in the nation that have an unblemished
record coming into the midweek tilt, according to the
American Volleyball Coaches Association.
"Being on the road for the first two
weeks has been tough, so we are looking forward to
playing in front of our home crowd on Wednesday night,”
said head volleyball coach Ron Arenz.
Junior Allison Nail leads the squad
in kills with 136 on the season. This past weekend, the
Cullman, Ala.-native averaged 18.5 kills a match,
including a season-best 25 in her last outing against
ASU. Sophomore Ana Gabriela Pedrosa ranks second on the
team with 69 kills. She also has a team-high 16 service
aces.
Spring Hill College, out of Mobile,
Ala. enters the in-state matchup sporting a 3-0 mark on
the season. The Badgers, of the NAIA, claimed a sweep
of Loyola on Monday night. SHC is under the direction
of first-year head coach Beth Ring.
Following the home opener, UWA returns to the road with
a trip to Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 7, taking part
in the Clark-Atlanta University Tournament. The Tigers
will tangle with Alabama State and Clark Atlanta. UWA
opened the season with a win over CAU at the Augusta
State Classic two weeks ago.
