Hot Start Tigers Open Home Slate Against Spring Hill On Wednesday

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — After posting the program’s best start with eight-straight wins, the University of West Alabama volleyball team will open the 2007 home slate on Wednesday, Sept. 5 in Pruitt Hall against in-state foe Spring Hill College.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.  Admission to all home volleyball matches is free.

UWA returns home after spending the first two weeks of the season on the road in Augusta, Ga. and Jefferson City, Tenn.  At the Carson Newman Labor Day Tournament, the Red and White claimed wins over Tusculum, Mars Hill College, Alderson-Broaddus and Augusta State University.  The Tigers are one of 13 Division II teams in the nation that have an unblemished record coming into the midweek tilt, according to the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

"Being on the road for the first two weeks has been tough, so we are looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd on Wednesday night,” said head volleyball coach Ron Arenz.

Junior Allison Nail leads the squad in kills with 136 on the season.  This past weekend, the Cullman, Ala.-native averaged 18.5 kills a match, including a season-best 25 in her last outing against ASU.  Sophomore Ana Gabriela Pedrosa ranks second on the team with 69 kills.  She also has a team-high 16 service aces.

Spring Hill College, out of Mobile, Ala. enters the in-state matchup sporting a 3-0 mark on the season.  The Badgers, of the NAIA, claimed a sweep of Loyola on Monday night.  SHC is under the direction of first-year head coach Beth Ring.

Following the home opener, UWA returns to the road with a trip to Atlanta, Ga. on Friday, Sept. 7, taking part in the Clark-Atlanta University Tournament.  The Tigers will tangle with Alabama State and Clark Atlanta.  UWA opened the season with a win over CAU at the Augusta State Classic two weeks ago.
