JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The
University of West Alabama remained undefeated on the
season after defeating Tusculum College and sweeping
Mars Hill on Friday at the Carson Newman Labor Day
Tournament. With the two victories, UWA has reeled off
six straight wins to tie the best start in school
history. The 2001 team started the season with six
consecutive wins to start the season.
In the tourney opener, UWA claimed
the opening game against the Pioneers 30-22, but dropped
the second game 30-18. The setback was the first of the
season for the Tigers as they opened the season with
four straight sweeps. The Red and White rebounded to
claim the next two in tightly contested games, 30-25 and
30-28. UWA registered four players in double figure
kills led by junior Allison Nail’s 15 kills. Nail, the
current Gulf South Conference Eastern Division Offensive
Player of the Week also secured her second double-double
of the campaign with 11 digs. Senior Rafaella Maranhao
and Ana Gabriela Pedrosa each tallied 13 kills.
In the afternoon session, the Red and
White faced a hot Mars Hill squad that came into the
match without a blemish in the loss column after opening
the tournament with a win over North Greenville. UWA
took game one of the sweep 30-20, but held off the Lions
of MHC 30-27 and 30-22 respectively in the final two
games.
The Tigers will square off with Alderson-Broaddus
College and Augusta (Ga.) State on Saturday. Sept. 1.
Match times are slated for 12:45 p.m. and 5 p.m. CST.
