ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The
University of West Alabama
volleyball team swept a pair
of matches on Friday at the
Henderson State
Invitational. UWA blanked
Arkansas Tech to open the
day and finished off
host-Henderson State in a
3-1 affair. The two wins
over the two Gulf South
Conference West Division
foes pushes UWA’s winning
streak to a conference-best
14 matches.
The Tigers, 23-5, have
surpassed last year’s win
total with Friday’s
victories and are four wins
shy of equaling the 2007
squad’s 27 wins. UWA edged
ATU (17-10) 25-23 and 25-22
before trouncing the Green
and Gold 25-13 to clinch the
match. Against HSU (11-13),
the Red and White took the
first two sets by identical
scores of 25-20. The Lady
Reddies staved off the sweep
with a 25-13 third-set win.
The Tigers turned back HSU
25-22 in the fourth set.
Senior Jessica Crook led a
trio of Tigers who posted
double figure kill totals
against HSU. Crook turned
in a season-best 23 kills
along with nine digs. The
Ohatchee, Ala.-product has
turned in double digit kill
totals in nine of her last
11 matches. She finished
with only six miscues on 45
total attempts (.378).
Crook added nine kills
against the Golden Suns.
Senior Jordan Kent posted
back-to-back double digit
kill outings with her 14
kill performance against the
Lady Reddies. The Decatur,
Ala.-native registered a
match-high 12 kills in the
ATU tilt. Senior Ana
Gabriela Pedrosa was
credited with her ninth
double-double of the season
with ten kills and ten
digs. Junior Thais
Hollerbach paced UWA in digs
in both contests, carding
six and 14 respectively.
The
Tigers close out their
weekend trip to Arkadelphia,
Ark. against Ouachita
Baptist on Saturday. Match
time is set for 10 a.m.
