West Alabama looks to extend winning streak

LIVINGSTON, Ala.—The University of West Alabama volleyball team broke into the win column last weekend and looks to extend its match winning streak this weekend at the UAH-Country Inn Suites Volleyball Tournament in Huntsville, Ala.

The Tigers open tournament play 11:00 a.m. Friday against Arkansas Tech and will meet Harding at 4:00 p.m. During Saturday's second day, West Alabama plays Christian Brothers at 9:00 a.m. and will take on Henderson State in the final match of the tournament at 1:00 p.m.

"I'm pleased with the team's development," Tigers head coach Ron Arenz said. "Although our current record (2-6) doesn't indicate our potential, every time the players get ready for practice or competition, they always give their best effort and that's all I can ask for. This weekend will be another great opportunity for this young team to gain valuable match experience and establish themselves as the emerging program of the GSC."

West Alabama opened last weekend's tournament at Belhaven College with a pair of losses to Loyola University of New Orleans, 3-2 (26-30, 18-30, 30-21, 30-26, 14-16) and Lyon College, 3-1 (23-30, 30-23, 21-30, 27-30). The Tigers bounced back Saturday with victories over Belhaven, 3-1 (29-31, 30-18, 30-16, 30-21) and Rhodes College, 3-1 (13-30, 30-24, 30-26, 30-24).

Sophomore Nici Steckel paces the West Alabama offense with 112 kills through 30 games played, while Sophomore Allison Nail is second on the team with 95 in 24 games. Freshman Giuliana De Francesco leads the squad in assists with 253, averaging 8.16 a contest.

After this weekend's tournament in Huntsville, Ala., the Tigers begin a stretch of five-straight home matches, beginning 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12 at Pruitt Hall against Gulf South Conference opponent Montevallo.
