CARROLLTON, Ga. – In
thrilling fashion, the
University of West Alabama
volleyball team tied the school
record for consecutive wins at
17 with a 3-2 victory over West
Georgia Friday night. The
Tigers remain the lone
undefeated team in NCAA Division
II Women’s Volleyball.
UWA,
playing its first match in over
a week, dropped the opening game
30-28 to the Wolves, but fought
back to sustain the UWG momentum
by claiming game two 30-25. The
Red and Blue took a 2-1
advantage into the fourth game
after downing UWA 30-23. The
Tigers put together a valiant
effort to force a fifth and
deciding game with a 30-28 win
in game four. It marks the
first time this season that UWA
played a five-set match. UWA
topped UWG 15-12 to win its
fourth-straight Gulf South
Conference Eastern Division
match.
“This was a
hard fought match tonight,” said
head coach Ron Arenz. “The
girls kept fighting and fighting
and never gave up. Hopefully, we
saved some in the tank for
tomorrow against Albany State.”
The Tigers
placed three players in double
figures in kill, including two
with double-doubles. Junior
Allison Nail finished with 25
kills, which matches a
season-best for the Cullman,
Ala.-product. Sophomore Ana
Gabriela Pedrosa posted 17 kills
and ten digs in the match.
Pedrosa turned in a .481 hitting
percentage in the affair along
with three service aces. Senior
Rafaella Maranhao carded her
third double-double of the
season with 11 kills and 15
digs. As a team, UWA combined
for ten blocks in the win. It
marks the second time this
season that the Tigers have
registered double figures in
blocks against a GSC foe. The
squad finished with 13 against
Montevallo.
The Tigers
will make the three hour journey
to Albany, Ga. to face Albany
State on Saturday. The UWA-ASU
match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
