LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
A day after dropping their first
match of the season, the 25
th-ranked
West Alabama volleyball team got
back on the winning track by
sweeping Valdosta State on
Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
The
Tigers put away the Lady Blazers
in the opening game 30-26. In
the first game, UWA posted a
match-high .429 hitting
percentage as a team. The Red
and White maintained the
momentum in the second game
topping VSU 30-24. UWA put the
finishing touches of the match
after taking a commanding lead
on the Red and Black to win the
third and final game 30-25. The
win moves UWA to 5-1 in league
competition while the setback
drops VSU to 0-6 in the
conference.
“I was proud of the way the
girls responded after Friday’s
loss to West Florida,” said head
coach Ron Arenz. “We have a big
match on Tuesday with Montevallo
at our place.”
UWA produced a balanced
attack, registering four players
in double figures in kills.
Junior Allison Nail tallied a
match-high 14 kills and was one
dig shy of a double-double
performance. Senior Rafaella
Maranhao carded 13 kills and
nine digs in the contest while
Jessica Crook and Ana Gabriela
Pedrosa each added 11 kills.
Pedrosa also secured 11 digs in
the match.
VSU was led by Steph
Kirrstetter with 13 kills.
Kathrine Carter pitched in 10
kills.
The Tigers close out their
three-match homestand on
Tuesday, Oct. 9 when they face
in-state foe Montevallo at 7
p.m. at Pruitt Hall. UWA
claimed the first meeting of the
season between the two rivals at
Montevallo, 3-1.
