LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
With a Gulf South Conference
Tournament berth on the line,
the University of West Alabama
volleyball team will take on the
University of Alabama at
Huntsville on Thursday night at
7 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
The Tigers, 6-2 in league
competition, need a win to
secure their first trip to the
GSC Tournament since 2001.
Although UWA fell to North
Alabama on Tuesday night in
Florence, Ala., the magic number
to clinch a berth into the post
season event was reduced to one
with Montevallo’s loss to UAH on
Tuesday. The tournament will be
hosted by the GSC Western
Division champion on Nov. 9-10.
UWA has
claimed two out of the last
three matches against the Lady
Chargers of UAH, including a 3-0
sweep at Huntsville earlier this
season. The last time the
Tigers scored a season sweep of
UAH was in 2002 when the Red and
White swept both matches. In
the previous meeting, junior
Allison Nail finished with a
match-high nine kills along with
six digs. Sophomore Ana Gabriela
Pedrosa added eight kills.
Senior Rafaella Maranhao and
Junior Teresa Clements each
posted seven kills each.
Maranhao registered a .429
hitting percentage clip in the
match.
With her
match-high 14 kills against UNA,
Nail has registered 950 career
kills in her two-plus seasons in
the Red and White. The Cullman,
Ala. needs 50 more to become
just the second UWA volleyball
player to reach the 1000-kill
plateau in a career. Former
Tiger standout Regan Adams
(1998-2000) registered 1,236
career kills. Nail currently
ranks third all-time in kills
behind Adams and current
assistant coach Amanda Heaton.
Following the UAH match, the
Tigers will travel to
Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday to
take on Division III foe
Huntington. Match time is set
for 2 p.m.
