Tigers Notch 20th Win; UWA Sweeps Montevallo 3-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The University of West Alabama volleyball team notched its 20th win of the season and sixth in the Gulf South Conference with a sweep of in-state rival Montevallo on Tuesday night at Pruitt Hall.

The win secured a season sweep of the Lady Falcons of UM.  UWA claimed the first meeting 3-1 on the road.  The Tigers opened the sweep with a 30-25 win in the opening game to set the tone for the rest of the night.  The Red and White made quick work of the Purple and Gold in the second game, downing UM 30-18.  As a team in the second game, the Tigers recorded a.320 attacking percentage.  UWA finished off the Lady Falcons 30-23 to claim its second-straight win since dropping its first match of the season on Friday.

“Tonight was a solid win for us,” said head coach Ron Arenz.  “This keeps our position in the conference for a berth into the conference tournament.”

UWA (20-1, 6-1 GSC) was led by junior Allison Nail with 11 kills on 27 attempts.  She also posted eight digs in the contest.  It marks the second-straight match against UM that the Cullman, Ala.-native has registered double figures in kills.  In the first match against the Lady Falcons, she finished with a match-high 20 kills.  Sophomore Jessica Crook finished with 10 kills in the affair along with four blocks.  Crook has tallied double figure kills in the last three matches.  Senior Taylor Borunda turned in a match-high performance in digs with 12.

Kara Zawisza paced the UM (5-19, 2-6 GSC) charge with 11 kills.  Lauren Tortorici recorded 10 digs in the setback.

The Tigers will step out of conference play to participate in the Coca-Cola Classic, hosted by Montevallo this weekend.  UWA will face Lynn and Martin-Methodist on Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.  The Tigers will square off with Armstrong Atlantic and Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
