LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
The University of West
Alabama volleyball team notched
its 20th win of the
season and sixth in the Gulf
South Conference with a sweep of
in-state rival Montevallo on
Tuesday night at Pruitt Hall.
The win
secured a season sweep of the
Lady Falcons of UM. UWA claimed
the first meeting 3-1 on the
road. The Tigers opened the
sweep with a 30-25 win in the
opening game to set the tone for
the rest of the night. The Red
and White made quick work of the
Purple and Gold in the second
game, downing UM 30-18. As a
team in the second game, the
Tigers recorded a.320 attacking
percentage. UWA finished off
the Lady Falcons 30-23 to claim
its second-straight win since
dropping its first match of the
season on Friday.
“Tonight was
a solid win for us,” said head
coach Ron Arenz. “This keeps
our position in the conference
for a berth into the conference
tournament.”
UWA (20-1,
6-1 GSC) was led by junior
Allison Nail with 11 kills on 27
attempts. She also posted eight
digs in the contest. It marks
the second-straight match
against UM that the Cullman,
Ala.-native has registered
double figures in kills. In the
first match against the Lady
Falcons, she finished with a
match-high 20 kills. Sophomore
Jessica Crook finished with 10
kills in the affair along with
four blocks. Crook has tallied
double figure kills in the last
three matches. Senior Taylor
Borunda turned in a match-high
performance in digs with 12.
Kara Zawisza
paced the UM (5-19, 2-6 GSC)
charge with 11 kills. Lauren
Tortorici recorded 10 digs in
the setback.
The Tigers
will step out of conference play
to participate in the Coca-Cola
Classic, hosted by Montevallo
this weekend. UWA will face
Lynn and Martin-Methodist on
Friday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. and 8
p.m. respectively. The Tigers
will square off with Armstrong
Atlantic and Lincoln Memorial on
Saturday.
