MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama
volleyball team finished the
Montevallo Coca-Cola Classic
with back-to-back 3-0 sweeps of
Armstrong Atlantic State and
Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at
the Student Activities Center on
the UM campus.
UWA, now 23-2 on the season,
battled back after dropping the
tournament-opening match to Lynn
University to claim
three-straight wins in the
two-day event. The Tigers
topped the Pirates of AASU
30-20, 30-25 and 30-26. The duo
of junior Allison Nail and
sophomore Ana Gabriela Pedrosa
led the way for the Red and
White. Nail turned in a
double-double with 12 kills and
12 digs. Pedrosa also tallied
12 kills and 12 digs in the
sweep. Giuliana De Francesco
secured her second double-double
of the tournament with 48
assists and 14 digs. As a team,
UWA posted 11 service aces.
The Tigers made quick work of
the Lady Railsplitters, downing
the former Gulf South Conference
for 30-19, 30-22 and 30-18. The
win marks the first triumph over
LMU since 2003. Nail had an
outstanding match, leading the
UWA charge with 17 kills on 27
attempts without out an error on
her stat sheet. Pedrosa and
sophomore Jessica Crook each
turned in 12 kills each.
Rafaella Maranhao was one kill
shy of a double-double with nine
kills and 13 digs.
“I am real proud of the girls
for the way they responded after
the loss to Lynn on Friday,”
said head coach Ron Arenz. “We
have a huge match on Tuesday
with North Alabama. They will
be hungry for us because we beat
them earlier at our place.”
The Red and White Tigers will
trek to Florence, Ala. on
Tuesday, Oct. 16, to face the
University of North Alabama.
Match time is set for 7 p.m.
