UWA Squares Off Against West Florida In Battle For East Division Supremacy in GSC Match of the Week

LIVE STATS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Two teams, 37 wins, and a combined 8-0 record in GSC play. That all comes together in Livingston, Ala., this Friday night, when West Florida takes on West Alabama in the GSC “Match of the Week”.

These two teams have been on a collision course since the conference slate began. Both have gotten off to tremendous starts, and sit atop the standings in the East Division. This is the first of two meetings between these squads, and will go along way in painting the postseason picture in the GSC.

West Florida heads into town riding a 10-game winning streak. Three of those came in the past week, including two big conference victories. UWF defended home court twice, dispatching UNA and UAH during a three-day span. The Argonauts are no slouch on the road either, posting a 5-0 record away from Pensacola.

Head coach Melissa Wolter’s squad is efficient in all areas of the game, ranking in the top five in the GSC in six major categories. Their depth is also a huge factor, with four different West Florida players having won player of the week honors this season. Defensively, Danielle Spitzer anchors the net, placing in the top five in the league in blocks per game with 1.24. That defensive unit will have it hands full, hoping to contain the lethal West Alabama attack.

UWA’s squad is in the midst of rewriting all of the records books of past Tiger teams, starting off the year a perfect 18-0. They are also ranked #25 in the nation, another first for the West Alabama program. Every week has seen a record fall for the Tigers, as they look to continue on their magical run. Head coach Ron Arenz and company are primed by their ferocious offense, pounding teams into submission from all over the court.

At the center of that barrage is junior Allison Nail, who is quickly becoming one of the league’s most feared attackers. She ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage, putting down points at a .397 clip. Nail, who has been selected as a player of the week this season, also is top five in the GSC in kills per game with 4.81. She leads a Tiger attack that is tops in the conference and third in the country in overall hitting percentage. They can manufacture points from the service line as well, ranking the top 10 nationally with 2.92 service aces per game.

This monumental match up will take place at Pruitt Hall on the campus of the University of West Alabama. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT, and look for complete post-game coverage on the GSC website, www.gulfsouthconference.org.
