ATLANTA, Ga. — The
University of West Alabama
volleyball team moved to 11-0 on
the season after a sweep of
Clark Atlanta and in-state foe
Alabama State on Friday in the
Clark Atlanta Tournament.
Playing for the second time this
season, UWA topped CAU 30-25,
30-19 and 30-21 to open the
day’s activity. The Tigers were
led by sophomore Ana Gabriela
Pedrosa, who carded a
double-double with 10 kills and
11 digs in the three-game
sweep. Junior Teresa Clements
registered nine kills and had
just one miscue in the match.
Sophomore Giuliana De Francesco
posted a double-double with 31
assists and contributed 11
digs. Newcomer Alley Rundles
saw her first collegiate action
in the match along with
recording an ace in her first
action of the year. As a team,
the Red and White turned in 11
service aces against the Lady
Panthers of CAU.
UWA downed the Hornets of ASU,
a Division I-A program, 30-19,
30-11 and 30-18 to close out the
pre-conference slate. Junior
Allison nail tallied eight kills
to lead the squad against the
Black and Gold. De Francesco
delivered 26 assists in the
affair while sophomore Jazlyn
Wright matched her career high
in kills with six. The Tigers
finished with 15 service aces.
“This is a great way to head
into the conference season on
Tuesday at Montevallo,” said
head coach Ron Arenz. “The
girls are playing with
confidence right now and that is
huge going in to Montevallo.”
UWA will open the Gulf South
Conference season next Tuesday,
Sept. 11, as it travels to
Montevallo to take on the Lady
Falcons at 7 p.m. The
conference debut has been tabbed
at the “Match of the Week” by
the GSC. The new initiative by
the conference will highlight
teams around the conference
throughout the volleyball
season, spotlighting one match
per week. It will take a look
at the history of the matchup,
along with quotes from coaches
and player profiles.
