Tigers split pair at tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The University of West Alabama volleyball squad opened the second day of the UAH-Country Inn and Suites Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Christian Brothers, but dropped the second match, losing 3-0 to Henderson State.

In the opener, freshman setter Giuliana De Francesco had a season-high 56 assists, while sophomore Allison Nail (pictured left) finished with a match-high 29 kills, setting a school record held previously by current West Alabama graduate assistant Amanda Heaton, who tallied 28 last season against Montevallo. Nail also had 10 digs.

Sophomore Teresa Clements also finished in double digits in kills with 13, while sophomore Jacquie Swan led the squad in digs with 26. Freshman Brittany Cousin added 12 digs, as the Tigers (3-9) dropped the opening game, 29-31, but bounced back with scores of: 30-26, 30-27, 30-21.

Lauren Amundson paced Christian Brothers (7-5) with 32 assists, while Krista Gyarmati had 14 kills and 12 digs. Jenna Cherry added 12 kills and 18 digs, while Hannah Orendorff finished with 11 kills.

Against Henderson State (10-4), the Tigers couldn’t get much going, losing to the Reddies, 24-30, 21-30, 18-30. De Francesco had 31 assists and finished with seven digs. Swan added 14 digs, while Nail led the Tigers offense with nine kills.

Rachel Norton had a team-high 40 assists, while Bethany Wright added 27 digs. Emily Trudgeon and Ivana Mali had 11 and 10 kills, respectively to pace Henderson State.

The Tigers begin a stretch of five-straight home matches, starting 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 12 at Pruitt Hall against Gulf South Conference foe Montevallo.
