LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama tennis teams fell
to Cameron University on Wednesday at the
Howard R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the UWA
campus. UWA men suffered an 8-1 defeat to
No. 11 Cameron while the Tiger women dropped
a 6-2 decision to the 30th-ranked
Aggie women.
On the men’s side, the
Red and White’s lone point at No. 6
singles. Lucas Nunes topped CU’s Jeff
Sasser in the tiebreaker set, 3-6, 6-3 (7),
after splitting the first two sets. UWA’s
Denton Meintjes fell to 50th
ranked Jordi Mullor of CU at No. 1, 6-2,
6-3. Aggie Daniel Pazos, ranked No. 46,
topped UWA’s Brandon Harris, 6-4, 6-3.
In women’s action, the
Tigers notched wins by Mariana Freitas at
No. 2 singles and the UWA pair of Nicole
Shanahan and Brittany Williams claimed a win
at the top doubles spot. Freitas turned
away CU’s Kim Romero, 6-2, 6-1 while
Shanahan and Williams ousted the Aggie duo
of Carolina Mullo and Irene Goeorge, 8-5.
Shanahan took 33rd ranked George
to the final set at court 1 in singles
activity. After falling in the first set,
6-4, the Wodonga, Australia-native claimed
the second set 6-2, but dropped a
hard-fought 6-3 third set.
UWA will embark on a tour
of the state of Florida next week during the
spring break holidays at the university.
The Tigers will face Eckerd, Tampa, Palm
Beach Atlantic and St. Leo next week in the
Sunshine state.
