LOUISVILLE, Ky. —The
University of West Alabama tennis teams
split with Bellarmine Unversity this past
Saturday with the UWA women downing BU 5-3
and the Tiger men falling to the Knights
5-2.
On the women’s side, UWA
(10-4) gained two early points in doubles
competition at No. 1 and No. 3. The Tiger
duo of Nicole Shanahan and Brittany Williams
ousted BU’s pair of Maria Hornung and Sarah
Roebker 8-2. UWA’s tandem of Mariana
Freitas and Chenge Tsapayi turned away
Elizabeth Bohnert and Lauren Cotton of BU,
8-5. In singles action, Shanahan, Freitas
and Tsapayi all notched wins at their
respective courts to earn UWA its tenth win
of the season. Shanahan cruised past
Roebker 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 while Freitas held
off Bohnert in the first set 7-5 and
finished the match with a 6-2 win in the
second set. Tsapayi picked up the fifth and
clinching point at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1
victory over Katie Sutton of BU.
In the men’s match, the
Tigers (9-3) earned two wins in doubles.
UWA’s Lucas Cruz and Carlin Tighe topped
BU’s Nathan Matthews and Todd Atcher 8-5 at
No. 2. Wes yarnton and James Gardner paired
up for an 8-5 win over Paul Clark and Tyler
Worley.
UWA was scheduled to face
Lindsey Wilson College and the University of
Southern Indiana on Friday but was cancelled
due to the weather.
