LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – Both University of West
Alabama tennis teams dropped their final
Gulf South Conference matches to in-state
rival North Alabama on Wednesday evening at
the Howard R. Vaughan Tennis Complex on the
UWA campus. The Lions claimed a 5-2
decision over the Tiger men, while UWA’s
women fell 5-3 to UNA.
In the
men’s duel, UNA claimed all three doubles
points to jumpstart the match. UWA’s Danish
Ahmad bounced back after dropping the first
set to UNA’s Zac Bereznicki to claim the
point at No. 2. Ahmad topped Bereznicki
6-2, 6-4 after falling 6-2 in the first.
Benny Delgado Rochas downed UNA’s Chris
Sodemann, 7-5, 6-4. UNA clinched the match
after Carlos Cardenos topped UWA’s Renat
Shaykhelislamov, 6-3, 6-0.
The men
fell to 15-6 overall and 0-4 in GSC play.
The Tiger women dropped to 11-13 overall and
2-3 in conference play. The UWA women
earned a berth in the GSC Tournament with
Saturday’s win over UAH.
In the
women’s match, UWA posted a pair of doubles
wins, as the top pairing of Mariana Freitas
and Victoria Jones turned back UNA’s Yuliya
Zelenukeys and Lenka Hola, 8-6. The Tiger
duo of Cori Waters and Brittany Williams
carded an 8-5 win over the Lion tandem of
Ashley Alfanzo and Arrie Moore, 8-5. In
singles, Nicole Shanahan out-lasted UNA’s
Victoria Rees at the top singles spot.
After falling 7-5 in the opening set,
Shanahan claimed straight sets, 6-4, 6-3
over Rees. UNA claimed four of the five
singles matches played and clinched the win
after UNA’s Moore topped UWA’s Waters, 6-2,
6-2.
