BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of
West Alabama tennis team placed four on the
All-Gulf South Conference East tennis team,
headlined by First Team selections Nicole
Shanahan and Benny Delgado Rochas. UWA’s
Mariana Freitas and Brittany Williams were
tabbed to the league’s Second Team.
With
her First Team status, Shanahan is a
two-time All-GSC First Team honoree, as the
Wodonga, Australia-sophomore earned First
Team honors as a freshman in 2008. This
season, Shanahan turned in a 19-5 singles
mark at No. 1 and posted a 16-12 mark in
doubles competition. Freitas registered an
18-5 record in singles, including 13 wins
playing at the No. 3 position. Williams, a
senior from Richford, NY, closed out her
career with 13 wins in singles and doubles.
The
trio of Tiger women helped guide the 2009
squad to its second-straight GSC Tournament
appearance last week in Montgomery, Ala.
UWA finished the season 14-15 on the women’s
side.
Delgado Rochas, garnered
conference honors after carding a stout 19-3
record in singles along with a pair of wins
in doubles. The Tel Aviv, Israel-rookie
tallied 11 wins at No. 3 for the Red and
White. UWA posted 18 wins against six
losses in 2009.
