UWA Places Four On All-GSC East Squad

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama tennis team placed four on the All-Gulf South Conference East tennis team, headlined by First Team selections Nicole Shanahan and Benny Delgado Rochas.  UWA’s Mariana Freitas and Brittany Williams were tabbed to the league’s Second Team.

With her First Team status, Shanahan is a two-time All-GSC First Team honoree, as the Wodonga, Australia-sophomore earned First Team honors as a freshman in 2008.  This season, Shanahan turned in a 19-5 singles mark at No. 1 and posted a 16-12 mark in doubles competition.  Freitas registered an 18-5 record in singles, including 13 wins playing at the No. 3 position.  Williams, a senior from Richford, NY, closed out her career with 13 wins in singles and doubles.

The trio of Tiger women helped guide the 2009 squad to its second-straight GSC Tournament appearance last week in Montgomery, Ala.  UWA finished the season 14-15 on the women’s side.

Delgado Rochas, garnered conference honors after carding a stout 19-3 record in singles along with a pair of wins in doubles.  The Tel Aviv, Israel-rookie tallied 11 wins at No. 3 for the Red and White.  UWA posted 18 wins against six losses in 2009.
