Tommy Joe Tarleton
Football and Baseball
(1947-1949)
Tommy
Joe Tarleton, a native of Thomasville, Ala., played three years (’47-’49) of
baseball and two years (’47-’48) of football for West Alabama after
transferring from Auburn. Tarleton became the assistant football, baseball and
basketball coach at Tuscaloosa High School in 1954. He became the head
basketball coach in 1960 and had a 431-69 record over 17 years. He sent teams to
the state tournament nine times and won two State Championships. Tarleton became
head golf coach in 1969 and won four State Championships in ten years. He also
served as head golf coach at Tuscaloosa Academy. Tarleton is also a member of
the UWA Society of The Golden Key.

Steve Davis
Football
(1970-1974)
Steve Davis,
a native of Aliceville, Ala., played football for West Alabama
from 1970-74. Davis was a member of the 1971 NAIA National
Championship team and was an All-GSC selection in 1973. Davis
served as an assistant coach at UWA in 1975 and 1976. Davis went
on to be the defensive coordinator at East Mississippi Junior
College from 1977-79, and was the secondary coach at North
Alabama from 1980-83. Davis came back to UWA as the defensive
coordinator from 1985 to 1986. He also served as the defensive
secondary coach at the University of Southern Mississippi and at
Louisiana State University. |
