UWA Athletics Announces 2009 Kick Off Banquet

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  The University of West Alabama Athletic Department has set its annual Kick Off Banquet for Monday, August 17, 2009, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Bell Conference Center on the UWA campus.  University of Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore will be the featured speaker at the event.  Tickets are available for $50 and can be purchased by calling the UWA Athletic Department at 205-652-3784 or 205-652-3652.

A variety of sports memorabilia will also be on hand for individuals to bid on through a silent auction.

Moore is in his 10th year as Director of Athletics at Alabama, and has been associated with Crimson Tide athletics since 1958 when he joined legendary football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s squad as a scholarship player.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1962 and a master’s in secondary education in 1963 from UA.  Moore has the distinction of earning seven national championship rings during his career as a player and coach, the first as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national championship team.  He is the only individual connected with Alabama coaching staffs, both past and present, to be a part of seven national championships (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979 and 1992).

After coaching stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the National Football League’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals, Moore returned to Alabama and was named assistant athletic director in 1993 and associate athletic director for external affairs in 1994.  He was named director of athletics in November, 1999.  UA’s athletic team’s have excelled in competition under Moore and he also directed a $125 million facilities campaign that revitalized the Crimson Tide’s athletic facilities.

The Tigers open the 2009 football season on Thursday, August 27, against Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss.  Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
