CARROLLTON, Ga. —West
Alabama’s softball team opened the Gulf South Conference
season with a pair of one-run setbacks to West Georgia
on Thursday in Carrollton, Ga. The Tigers fell 5-4 in
the opener and dropped a 13-12 slugfest to the Wolves in
night cap.
In the first game, the Tigers (15-11,
0-2 GSC) came from behind to even the score in top of
the seventh; plating the game-tying run to force UWG
(13-10, 2-0) to bat in the bottom half of the frame.
The Wolves posted the game-winning run in the at-bat to
open the conference slate with a win. Junior shortstop
Courtney Gordon led all Tigers at the plate with a
three-hit performance in game one. Monica Rethwill, who
pitched the final inning and took the loss in the
affair, was credited with two hits in the contest. The
Wolves got the best of UWA pitching, pounding out 13
hits in the affair.
In game two, the Red and White posted
eight runs thru the first three innings while UWG turned
in a three-spot in the second along with scoring five
runs in the third to knot the game at 8-8. The Tigers
re-took the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs in the
frame to take a 12-8 advantage heading into the bottom
of the fourth. The Wolves trimmed the lead down to 12-10
in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth, scoring
three in the inning and holding UWA scoreless in its
final three at-bats. Offensively, the Tigers had four
players in the line up with multiple hits, led by
catcher Ashley Edgar. Edgar collected three hits and
drove in four runs. Emily White registered three hits
as well, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Valisha Fincher
belted her fifth home run of the season in the first
inning, driving in two on the round-tripper.
The Tigers return home on Sunday,
March 16, welcoming Mars Hill to the UWA Softball
Complex. Game time is set for 2 p.m. UWA will host
nationally ranked Valdosta State on March 21. |
