LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama softball team will open the
2008 Gulf South Conference slate on Thursday, March 13,
traveling to Carrollton, Ga. to square off with West
Georgia in the GSC lid-lifter for both squads. First
pitch is set for 2 p.m. CST.
The Tigers bumped their record to
15-10 on the season on Tuesday with a sweep of Miles
College in Birmingham. The Red and White topped the
Golden Bears 11-4 in the opening game and blanked MC 8-0
in the night cap. UWA pitching combined for a two-hit
shutout in the second contest. In the opening tilt, the
Tigers posted four extra base hits, including home runs
by freshman second baseman Kelli Hartley and junior
first baseman Monica Rethwill. Hartley leads the squad
with 10 round trippers on the season, a new UWA school
record for home runs in a season for a rookie.
The Wolves of UWG enter the league
opening series with an 11-10 mark on the season.
Candice Brown, the 2007 GSC Freshman of the Year and
current GSC Player of the Week, paces the UWG line up
with a .353 batting clip.
The series between UWA and UWG ranks
as the third-longest series in school history.
Thursday’s meeting will be the 67th and 68th
all-time between the two GSC foes on the softball
diamond. The Tigers own a 41-26 overall mark in the
series. Last season, the two squads split the season
series in Livingston.
The Tigers return home on Sunday,
March 16, welcoming Mars Hill to the UWA Softball
Complex. Game time is set for 2 p.m. UWA will host
nationally ranked Valdosta State on March 21. |
