LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama softball team will return to
the diamond this weekend, hosting 11th-ranked
Valdosta State and West Florida at the UWA Softball
Complex on Friday and Saturday respectively. First
pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m.
The Tigers will be looking for their
first conference win of the season after opening Gulf
South Conference activity last week at West Georgia.
UWA dropped a pair of one-run contests to the Wolves.
UWA’s last outing on the diamond was a sweep of Mars
Hill College last Sunday. The Tigers overcame deficits
in both affairs to claim the wins. The 11th-ranked
Blazers invade Livingston with a 26-6 overall mark and a
4-2 worksheet in the GSC. Friday’s first game with VSU
will be the 60th all-time between the two
institutions on the softball diamond. The Red and Black
hold a 41-19 advantage in the overall series.
UWA enters the weekend activity with
the third-best batting average (.323) in the GSC while
VSU’s pitching staff ranks second in the league with a
1.83 earned run average. The Blazers also sport the top
fielding percentage in the conference with a .964 clip.
UWA freshman Kelli Hartley is the home run leader in the
GSC with 10. The Northport, Ala.-product also leads the
league in RBIs with 34. Junior shortstop Courtney
Gordon leads the Tigers in hits with 37, which ranks her
fourth in the conference.
Following this weekend’s GSC affairs,
the Tigers will embark on a tour of the Bluegrass State,
traveling to Louisville, Ky. on Wednesday, March 26, to
face Bellarmine before trekking to Frankfort, Ky. for a
dual with Kentucky State on Thursday, March 27.
