BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama softball team swept
a doubleheader from in-state foe Miles College on Tuesday
at Pleasant Grove High School in the Birmingham, Ala.
Area. The Tigers claimed game one 11-4 and blanked the
Golden Bears 8-0 in the finale.
The Tigers plated
seven runs thru the first four innings to take command
of the contest. UWA chalked up six hits in the opening
game, four of which were extra base knocks. Junior
first baseman Monica Rethwill connected on her third
home run on the season with a three-run blast in the UWA
fourth to extend the lead to 7-2 after four innings of
play. Freshman Kelli Hartley drilled her third home run
in two days with a three-run dinger in the top of the
seventh. Hartley posted her eighth and ninth round
tripper on Monday against St. Leo. She now has ten on
the season, a new UWA school record for a rookie.
Junior shortstop Courtney Gordon and freshman Angela
Smith recorded doubles in the affair. Junior Emily
White earned her seventh win of the season with a
three-inning performance in the circle.
In the night cap,
UWA pitching combined for a two-hit shutout and finished
with eight strike outs combined in the blanking of MC.
Kassadie Jones (2-1) picked up the win, turning in a
one-hit, five strike out showing. Brittany McGee was
credited with three strike outs and gave up just one MC
hit. Rethwill pitched the final frame, recording a
strike out.
Offensively, Smith
led the UWA line up with a multiple-hit game, including
her second double on the day. She also scored a run in
the contest. Miranda Bryan also registered a
two-bagger. As a team, the Tigers collected nine hits
in the contest.
The Tigers open Gulf South Conference
action on Thursday, March 13, traveling to West Georgia.
First pitch is set for 2 p.m. CST. The Red and White
will host Mars Hill on Sunday, March 16. |
