ATLANTA, Ga. –
The University of West Alabama softball was able to
play one game on Friday at the Clark Atlanta University
Invitational, as weather played havoc with the
tournament’s schedule on the opening day. The Tigers
dropped a 5-2 decision to Nova Southeastern to open the
two-day event.
NSU (17-10) plated
runs in three-straight innings in the contest, opening
the scoring with a run in the third, two in the fourth
before UWA (12-9) scored in the top of the fifth on a
sacrifice fly by senior Krista Merrifield, scoring
junior shortstop Courtney Gordon, who reached base with
a triple in the frame. Gordon, a native of Columbus,
Miss., was the lone Tiger with multiple hits in the
contest. The Sharks picked up insurance runs in the
fifth and sixth respectively to pick up the win. The
Red and White added a run in the top of the seventh with
a double by junior Emily White, scoring Monica Rethwill,
who reached via a walk.
Rethwill suffered
the loss in the affair for UWA, but struck out six in
the outing and allowing just two earned runs in her six
innings of work.
The Tigers are
scheduled to play Fort Valley State and Claflin
University on Saturday to close out the CAU event.
UWA returns home on Monday, welcoming
St. Leo to the UWA Softball Complex.
