LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Junior
Emily White’s single to the right side of the infield
lifted West Alabama over St. Leo 6-5 to earn a Monday
split with the Lions at the UWA Softball Complex.
UWA, down 5-4 heading into the final
at-bat, got a single by catcher Ashley Edgar, who
knotted the game up at 5-5 after a Monica Rethwill
single. White drove in Rethwill with her hit to give
the Tiger’s their 13th win of the season
after dropping a one-run, 7-6 setback to the Lions in
game one. The Red and White jumped out to a 3-0 lead in
the second inning, highlighted by sophomore Mary
Wright’s first career homerun. The two RBI round
tripper plated Valisha Fincher, who reached via a walk
and Courtney Gordon reached base after a single up the
middle. The Lions answered in the top of the third
with three runs scored to even the affair. The
Tigers regained the lead on freshman second baseman
Kelli Hartley’s solo shot to center field. The
home run was her second of the day and ninth of the season, tying the
UWA school record for home runs by a rookie. The
Northport, Ala.- product connected on a three-run home
run in the opening contest to give UWA a 6-3 lead.
SLU plated the tying and go-ahead run
in the sixth. Monica Dominguez drilled a single to left
to score the fourth and fifth run for the Lions.
White (6-3) picked up the win after
pitching a scoreless top of the seventh. Junior
Brittany McGee got the start and pitched three innings
and posting one strike out and allowing just two Lion
hits in the tilt.
UWA returns to action on Tuesday,
traveling to Miles for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The
twinbill will be played at Pleasant Grove High School in
the Birmingham, Ala. area. The Tigers open Gulf South
Conference activity on Thursday, March 13 against West
Georgia.
