LIVINGSTON, Ala. — The
University of West Alabama softball team turned in two
come-from-behind victories against Mars Hill College on
Sunday at the UWA Softball Complex. UWA earned a 3-2
win in the opener and topped MHC 4-2 in the second
contest.
The Tigers (17-12) fell behind 2-0 in
both affairs before overcoming both deficits for the two
wins. In game one, the Mountain Lions (24-7) scratched
the scoreboard with two runs in the opening frame, but
UWA starter Emily White stymied MHC over the next six
innings, throwing a complete game shut out to earn her
eighth win of the season. After posting four hits in
the first inning, the Ragland, Ala. junior scattered
three hits the rest of the way. UWA struck for a run in
the third after senior Krista Merrifield got the Red and
White bats going with a one-out double to left field.
Junior Laura Bagwell plated Merrifield with a single to
left. The Tigers scored the tying and winning runs in
the fifth on RBI from Angela Smith, who reached on a
single up the middle and scored the winning run on an
MHC miscue.
In game two, MHC plated a run in the
first frame on Natalie Haithcox’s RBI single, scoring
Ashley Angell. The Blue and Gold extended the lead in
the fourth with a run-scoring double by Anna James. UWA
responded with a three-spot in the bottom half of the
frame. Junior Monica Rethwill got the ball rolling with
a lead off walk followed by back-to-back singles by
White and Courtney Gordon. Gordon’s knock scored
Rethwill to put the Tigers on the board. After two outs
in the frame, Bagwell struck out on a wild pitch,
scoring White from third to even the game at 2-2.
Gordon was plated by Ashley Edgar’s slap up the middle.
UWA got an insurance run in the fifth with a solo home
run by Valisha Fincher to centerfield. The
round-tripper was her sixth of the season.
UWA pitching combined for just a
six-hit performance by MHC in the night cap. Aubree
Hudson notched her third win of the season with a four
inning performance and striking out three in the
outing. Rethwill and Brittany McGee combined to allow
just one Lion hit in the final three frames. McGee was
credited with her third save of the season.
The Tigers return to Gulf South
Conference activity next weekend, hosting nationally
ranked Valdosta State on Friday, March 21 and West
Florida on Saturday, March 22. First pitch for the UWA-VSU
dual is set for 2 p.m. on the UWA campus.
