WILLIAMSBURG,
Ky. – The University of West Alabama softball team
started its eight-game road trip with a split against
Missouri University of Science & Technology in
Williamsburg, Ky. on Wednesday. The twinbill was played
on the University of the Cumberlands campus. The Miners
of MS&T claimed game one 7-3 while UWA rebounded in the
second contest to earn a 4-1 win.
Junior Brittany
McGee (3-1) pitched her second complete game in her last
three outings, keeping the Miners off track until the
sixth when they posted their only run in the affair.
The Demopolis, Ala.-native has allowed just seven earned
runs in her last 20 innings pitched in her last three
circle appearances. UWA (19-16) got on the board with a
run in the fourth and extended the one-run game to 3-0
with two runs scored in the fifth. The Tigers would add
their final run of the contest with a seventh-inning
run. The Red and White had four players in the line up
with multiple hits. Freshman Valisha Fincher registered
two hits, one being a double. She also scored two runs
and was credited with a stolen base. Freshman Kelli
Hartley, who led UWA at the plate in the first game with
a 3-for-4 performance, including her 11th
home run of the season, had a single and a double along
with a pair of RBIs in the contest. The Northport,
Ala.-product moved into second place in the Gulf South
Conference in home runs with her solo shot in the first
game. Junior Emily White and Kassadie Jones each
finished with two hits apiece in the win.
In the opener, the
Miners (13-10) jumped on the board with runs in each of
the first three frames. The Red and White posted a run
in the first and third to trim the lead down to 5-2
after three complete innings and closed the deficit to
5-3 on Hartley’s fifth-inning solo shot. Junior Catcher
Ashley Edgar turned in a two-hit performance in the
setback.
The Tigers will travel to Frankfort,
Ky. on Thursday, March, 27, with a doubleheader with
Kentucky State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CST.
