MONTICELLO, Ark. –
The University of West Alabama
wranglers returned to competition
this weekend, taking part in the
University of Arkansas at Monticello
rodeo. The UWA women finished fourth
with 165 points, while the UWA men
finished in sixth with 290 points.
Justin Caylor
won the saddle bronc riding with 170
total points. Caylor won the first
round and the average to claim the
title. Daniel Poole finished third
in the bull riding with 80 points.
“We had a good
weekend. Things started out great,
but we had some bad luck and
finished with a good weekend,” said
UWA Coach Chad Phipps. “Justin (Caylor)
had a really good weekend, winning
the first go and the average in the
saddle bronc riding. Daniel placed
third in the first round of the bull
riding and third in the average.”
Alex Caudle
finished third in the first round of
the calf roping and concluded the
rodeo tied for sixth in the calf
roping.
Lauren Hedrick
finished third in the breakaway
roping with 95 points. Jenna
Robinson picked up a fourth place
finish in the barrel racing with 70
total points.
“Lauren
(Hedrick) made two solid runs in the
breakaway. She was tied for fifth in
the first round and was third in the
short round and in the average,”
Phipps said. “Jenna (Robinson)
turned in an excellent performance
for her first rodeo of the year.
Christi Heisman returned for the
championship round on Saturday
night, but had some back luck that
caused her not to place.
“Everyone was
determined to win this weekend and I
am looking forward to the rest of
the season. My job for the next few
weeks is to teach them how to handle
the pressure and make everything
positive,” stated Phipps.
West Alabama
returns to action on Thursday, Apr.
2, as the wranglers take part in the
Northwest Mississippi Community
College rodeo. The three-day event
concludes on Saturday, Apr. 4.
