UWA Rodeo Starts Season At MVC Stampede

LIVINGSTON, Ala.  – The University of West Alabama rodeo team will open the chutes on the 2008-09 season this weekend in Marshall, Mo., participating in the Missouri Valley College Rodeo Stampede.  Events will get underway on Thursday, Sept. 11 and run through Saturday, Sept. 13.

UWA head coach Chad Phipps enters his second season directing the rodeo program.  The Tiger wranglers finished fourth in the Ozark Region on the women’s side while the men placed eighth in the region.  Christi Heisman, who placed 15th in the nation at the National Collegiate Rodeo Finals in the goat tying competition, returns to lead the women’s squad.  Heisman also finished third in the Ozark Region in the same competition.

Phipps welcomes six newcomers to the men’s team along with returning members Daniel Poole and Justin Caylor.  Poole placed seventh in the region in bull riding a season ago.  Caylor turned in a seventh-place region finish in the saddle bronc riding.

Following this weekend’s action, UWA returns to competition on Sept. 25-27 at the Southern Arkansas Rodeo.  The Tigers will host the UWA Rodeo on Oct. 9-11 at the Don C. Hines Rodeo Complex in Livingston.
