Tigers Earn GSC Win Over West Georgia, 70-61

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team earned its first Gulf South Conference win of the season over West Georgia, 70-61, on Saturday at UWG’s Coliseum.  The win over the Wolves is the second-straight win over the GSC foe.

After pushing its 23-point halftime lead out to as many as 27 points at 61-34 on a Brandon Hampton lay up, the Tigers (7-8, 1-1 GSC) staved off a UWG charge in the final minutes of the contest in which the Wolves trimmed the lead down to as many as six points with just 43 ticks left in the contest.  UWA had a chance to seal the deal at the free throw line, but failed to convert at the line six times in the final minutes.  Junior Jason Swanson and junior Dominique Coleman converted at the free throw line to secure the nine-point road GSC win.

The Tigers caught fire four minutes deep into the contest, in particular Coleman, who drained four three-pointers in the first half and was credited with 14 of his team-high 16 points in the opening frame.  UWA put together a solid seven-minute stretch on both ends of the floor, expanding its lead out to double digits at 18-7 along with holding the Wolves scoreless during the same time frame.  The Red and White pushed its lead out to 20 points a few seconds over the one-minute mark.  The Tigers took their largest lead of the half into the dressing room at 42-19.  The 19-point output is the second lowest mark by a Tiger opponent this season.

Hampton, who scored ten points off the bench on Thursday at North Alabama, finished with 12 points and one rebound shy of posting a double-double.  Hampton has now posted double figures in three straight games.  Swanson turned in 11 points in the win.  Jamaine Nance and Lucas Hall each added eight points.  As a team, UWA shot 51 percent from the field while holding UWG to just 37 percent shooting on the night.

UWG’s John Pringle led all Wolves in scoring with 19 points.

The Tigers return to Pruitt Hall for the first time in 2009, hosting Concordia of Selma on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.  Live stats will be available along with audio and video streaming on the B2 Network at athletics.uwa.edu.
