VALDOSTA, Ga. –
The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team
dropped a double overtime, 83-76, decision to Valdosta
State on Thursday night at VSU’s PE Complex.
The game was sent
into a second overtime with a put back by UWA’s Chris
Davis with 24 ticks left on the clock to even the game
at 73-73. The Blazers (19-5, 7-3 GSC) out-scored the
Tigers (11-14, 3-7 GSC) 10-3 in the second overtime
session to claim the win.
The game was sent
into the extra period after Jamaine Nance drained a pair
of free throws with 0.5 seconds left in the game at
69-69. VSU’s Ricardo Lewis hit a lay up with one second
on the clock, but a player off the Blazer bench came
onto the playing floor. By rule, a technical foul is
assed to the team.
For the
second-straight game, UWA held a lead over the Blazers
at the intermission. The Tigers got off to a good
start, connecting on 48 percent from the field while VSU
hit 50 percent of its shots in the first half, but UWA
held a two-point edge, 33-31 at the break. UWA held a
double-digit lead at 21-11 at the midway point of the
half, but the Blazers trimmed deficit down to a basket
at 26-24 with 3:06 left in the period. The Red and White
did not relinquish the lead throughout the opening 20
minutes.
After a basket by
Jonathan Griffin to give the Tigers an eight-point edge
at the 15:38 mark, VSU went on a scoring barrage over
the next eight minutes, erasing the UWA lead and
outscoring the Tigers 22-0 during that stretch to take
its largest lead at 60-46. UWA stormed back with a
scoring spurt of its own, with a 17-3 run to tie the
game at 63-63 at the one minute mark. Junior Jason
Swanson keyed the UWA run and finished with a team-high
27 points. The Troy, Ala.-forward finished 9-of-16 from
the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Chris
Davis finished with 16 points, including 4-of-7 from
behind the three-point stripe. Griffin turned in a 12
point effort, his best since a 13-point outing against
Clark Atlanta. Junior Brandon Hampton led UWA in
rebounds with ten.
Tyrone Curnell
claimed game-high scoring honors with 31 points.
Curnell lived on the free throw line, scoring 13-of-15
points from the charity stripe. Lewis pitched in 12
points in the affair.
UWA returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 21,
hosting West Florida in the home season finale. Tip off
is set for 4 p.m. at Pruitt Hall. The Tigers will honor
their lone senior Jamaine Nance prior to the contest.
