LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team
will close out its three-game homestand on Thursday,
hosting Valdosta State University. Tip off is set for
7:30 p.m. at UWA’s Pruitt Hall.
The Tigers (8-9,
1-2 GSC) will look to get back in the win column after
falling to Gulf South Conference East leader, UAH on
Saturday, 86-77. Prior to the home GSC tilt, the Red
and White topped non-conference foe Concordia College,
67-59. The Blazers of VSU enter the contest with a 14-3
overall mark and a 2-1 record in the GSC. VSU, who is
receiving votes in this week’s National Association of
Basketball Coaches’ Poll, has claimed back-to-back wins
over West Georgia and North Alabama.
Junior forward
Jason Swanson put together an impressive stat sheet last
week, averaging 17 points per contest along with pulling
down 14.5 rebounds last week. Swanson turned in
back-to-back double-double performances last week.
Against CC, he posted 21 points and a season-best 17
rebounds. In the UAH setback, the Troy, Ala.-native
finished with 17 points and 12 boards. Swanson was one
assist away from double figures in assists for the week.
As a team, UWA is
averaging 67 points per contest and hitting 47 percent
from the field. The Tigers have out-rebounded their
opponent in 13 of the 17 games this season and holds a
+7.8 rebounding margin against the opposition. UWA
ranks third in the conference in rebounding margin.
Following Thursday’s GSC home affair,
UWA will travel to Pensacola, Fla. on Saturday, Jan. 24,
to take on the University of West Florida. Tip off is
set for 4 p.m. The contest will be carried by WZNJ
