LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama dropped a 77-58
decision to West Georgia on Thursday night in Gulf South
Conference East Division men’s hoops action at Pruitt
Hall.
The setback dropped
the Tigers to 10-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play
while the Wolves improved to 5-18, 2-7 in the league.
The 19-point win by UWG salvages a season split with
UWA, as the Red and White claimed a win on the UWG home
floor on Jan. 10.
UWG had the
hot-shooting hand, finishing with a 49 percent shooting
clip, including 50 percent from beyond the three-point
stripe. The Wolves held the homestanding Tigers to a 36
percent shooting night and forcing 19 UWA miscues. The
Tigers, who entered the contest draining 34 percent from
the three-point line, only managed to hit five in the
affair. UWA did claim the rebounding edge, 40-36.
The Wolves built
its first double-digit lead of the game, 24-13, at the
10:50 mark of the opening half on a lay up from Jeremy
Smith. The Red and Blue took its largest lead of the
half with a few ticks over the two-minute mark at
41-28. The Tigers trimmed the deficit to nine at the
intermission with a Jason Swanson bucket. Swanson, who
finished with a game-high 20 points, extended his string
of consecutive games with double digit points to 15
games. The Troy, Ala. junior was two rebounds shy of a
fifth-straight double-double. Swanson also dished four
assists.
The Tigers narrowed
the deficit down to seven points on two occasions early
in the second half, but a trey by Smith with 17:28 left
in the game pushed the deficit back to double digits.
Smith tallied 12 points in UWG’s winning cause. The
Wolves held a commanding lead at 72-49 at the 5:20 mark
en route to a 19-point road win.
UWA’s Chis Davis
added nine points on three treys in the first half,
while junior forward Brandon Hampton chipped in seven
points off the bench.
UWA returns to
action on Saturday, Feb. 14, hosting North Alabama, who
topped Montevallo, 80-67, on Thursday night. Tip off is
set for 4 p.m. on the UWA campus. The game will be
streamed online on the B2 Network along with live stats
at athletics.uwa.edu. |
