Hot Shooting UAH Tops UWA, 86-77

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team dropped an 86-77 Gulf South Conference decision to East division leader, University of Alabama in Huntsville, on Saturday night at Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus.

The Tigers (8-9, 1-2 GSC) ran into a hot-shooting UAH (11-5, 4-0 GSC) in the opening 20 minutes, with the Chargers draining nine treys in the first 20 minutes of the contest.   With success from beyond the three-point arc, the Chargers built its first double-digit lead at 21-9 on one of Casey Stafford’s five three-pointers.   The Blue and White pushed its lead out to a 17 point advantage at 40-23 with under a minute left in the period.  A late basket by UWA sent UAH to the intermission with a 15-point lead at 40-25. 

UWA found the shooting touch in the second half, after UAH took a commanding 20-point lead at 46-26 in the first minute of the final half, but the Tigers defensive attack keyed a UWA scoring run that trimmed the 20-point deficit down to seven points at 49-42 with 14:14 remaining in the contest.  Senior guard Jamaine Nance and junior guard Chris Davis combined for seven of UWA’s nine second half three-pointers.  Nance, a native of Huntsville, Ala., finished with a game-high 18 points, 15 coming in the final period.  Davis scored all 12 of his points in the final 20 minutes and dished out seven assists in the contest.  UAH, who posted 14 made three-pointers, only hit five in the second half, but they came a critical moments in the period, extending the lead out to 13 points on multiple occasions.

Junior forward Jason Swanson was credited with his second-straight double and fifth of the season with a 13 point, 12 rebound outing.  Swanson also had four assists in the affair.  Junior Lucas Hall added 15 points off the bench while Herman Mains posted 11 points in the setback.  As a team, UWA out-rebounded the Chargers 37-24.

Four of UAH’s starters reached double figures in scoring, led by Josh Magette’s 17 points.  Magette recorded a double-double with ten assists.  Stafford and Coleman each added 15 points while Jordan Brewer finished with 12 points.

The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Jan. 22, welcoming Valdosta State to Pruitt Hall.  Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
