UWA Comeback Falls Short At Alabama State, 71-59

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A strong second half comeback came up short, as the University of West Alabama men’s basketball team dropped a 71-59 decision to in-state foe Alabama State, an NCAA Division I program, on Monday night in Montgomery, Ala.

UWA (5-7) trailed 34-22 at the halftime break, but turned in a 37-point effort in the final period.  After trailing by the 12-point margin, the Tigers clawed their way back into the contest, trimming the lead down to as many as five points at 38-33 on a Jamaine Nane three-pointer with 15:01 left in the game.  The Red and White turned in a 52 percent (13-25) shooting figure in the second half.  The Hornets (3-7) went on a 10-0 scoring run to push the lead back out to double digits at 48-38.  ASU took its largest lead of the affair at the 67-46 with just 4:30 remaining on the game clock.

Junior Lucas Hall led all UWA scores with 13 points while the Tiger’s leading scorer coming into the contest, Jason Swanson, finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.  Junior Jonathan Griffin posted nine points in the setback.  As a team, the Tigers out-rebounded its opponent, 29-21.

ASU’s Andrew Hayles was credited with a game-high 24 points.

The Tigers will trek to Arkadelphia, Ark. to face Henderson State to open 2009 play on Saturday, Jan. 3.  Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
