MONTGOMERY, Ala.
– A strong second half comeback came up short, as
the University of West Alabama men’s basketball team
dropped a 71-59 decision to in-state foe Alabama State,
an NCAA Division I program, on Monday night in
Montgomery, Ala.
UWA (5-7) trailed
34-22 at the halftime break, but turned in a 37-point
effort in the final period. After trailing by the
12-point margin, the Tigers clawed their way back into
the contest, trimming the lead down to as many as five
points at 38-33 on a Jamaine Nane three-pointer with
15:01 left in the game. The Red and White turned in a
52 percent (13-25) shooting figure in the second half.
The Hornets (3-7) went on a 10-0 scoring run to push the
lead back out to double digits at 48-38. ASU took its
largest lead of the affair at the 67-46 with just 4:30
remaining on the game clock.
Junior Lucas Hall
led all UWA scores with 13 points while the Tiger’s
leading scorer coming into the contest, Jason Swanson,
finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Junior Jonathan Griffin posted nine points in the
setback. As a team, the Tigers out-rebounded its
opponent, 29-21.
ASU’s Andrew Hayles
was credited with a game-high 24 points.
The Tigers will trek to Arkadelphia,
Ark. to face Henderson State to open 2009 play on
Saturday, Jan. 3. Tip off is set for 2 p.m. |
