ARKADELPHIA, Ark. –
The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team
turned in a 42-point second half effort to cruise past
Henderson State, 75-58, on Saturday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
UWA (6-7) broke
open a dead-lock 33-33 halftime score in the opening
minutes and out-scored the Reddies (1-10) 42-25 in the
final period. The Tigers scored the first ten points of
the half to mount a 43-33 lead at the 17:08 mark on the
clock. Junior Jason Swanson scored six of the ten
points during the UWA run. The Troy, Ala-native
finished with 16 points in the winning effort. HSU
trimmed the lead down to three at the midway point of
the half, but the Tigers pushed the lead back out to
double figures at the eight minute mark and never looked
back. The Red and White took its largest lead of the
contest at 73-54 on a pair of free throws by Jonathan
Griffin with 2:37 left to play. As a team, UWA
connected on 58 percent (14-24) from the field and
converted on 12-of-14 from the free throw line. The
Tiger defense limited the Reddies to just eight made
shots in the final 20 minutes. For the seventh-straight
game, UWA has out-rebounded the opponent. The Tigers
pulled down 44 rebounds in the affair.
UWA turned in a
balanced scoring effort, with four players posting
double figure point totals. The Tigers were led by
Jamaine Nance’s game-high 19-point performance. The
Huntsville, Ala-product carded 15 of his team-best 19 in
the second half. Along with Swanson’s 16 points, junior
Brandon Hampton finished with 16 points off the bench
while Dominique Coleman added a season-high 12 points in
the 17-point win. Griffin pulled down 13 rebounds along
with six points.
HSU’s Kyle Oldham
paced the Reddies with 15 points.
The Tigers will open Gulf South
Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 8, visiting North
Alabama. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. The contest will be
carried on WZNJ 106.5 FM. |
