LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama men’s basketball
team will open the 2009 portion of the schedule on
Saturday, Jan. 3, against Gulf South Conference West
division member Henderson State. Tip of is set for 2
p.m. at HSU’s Duke Wells Center in Arkadelphia, Ark.

UWA (5-7) returned
from the holiday break with a 71-59 setback to NCAA
Division I foe Alabama State on Monday. The Tigers put
together a solid second half performance against the
Hornets of ASU, trimming a 12-point halftime lead down
to five points in the early going of the half. UWA
connected on 52 percent from the field in final half
along with claiming the rebounding advantage, 29-21.
The Red and White currently out-rebounds the opponent by
a +7.2 margin. In UWA’s two games this season against
NCAA Division I members, Jacksonville State and ASU, the
Tigers finished with more boards.
A trio of Tigers
currently average double figures in scoring, led by
junior forward Jason Swanson. The Troy, Ala.-native
averages 14.3 points per contest and has posted double
digit scoring in eight of the ten games he has
participated in. Swanson has turned in two double
doubles this season. Forward Jonathan Griffin adds 11.7
points per game while senior Jamaine Nance registers
10.8 points a game.
The Reddies of HSU
have been idle since dropping a 64-52 decision to
Missouri Western on Dec. 20 in Las Vegas, Nev. HSU’s
(1-9) lone win came against Philander Smith in its
season opener. HSU knocked off the Tigers 74-59 last
season at Pruitt Hall. Saturday’s meeting will be the
ninth meeting between the two GSC institutions on the
hardwood, with UWA holding a 5-3 advantage in the
series.
Following the HSU tilt, UWA will open
the 2009 GSC schedule at North Alabama on Thursday, Jan.
8. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. ay UNA’s Flowers Hall.
