GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The University
of West Alabama men’s basketball team
dropped a one-point, 58-57, decision to
Tusculum in the opening game of the
Jameson Inn Classic at Tusculum College
in Greeneville, Tenn.
UWA
(2-2), which led the game from the 16:17
mark of the opening half, relinquished
the lead with just ten seconds left in
the contest after TC’s Ryan Troutman hit
a jumper in the final seconds for the
go-ahead basket. The Tigers led by as
many as 11 points in the opening half
and took a seven-point, 30-23 lead into
the halftime break. The Red and White
opened the margin out to eight points at
the 10:45 mark of the final period.
The
Pioneers (3-1) started the comeback
after trailing by seven with just under
four minutes left in the contest. TC
finished with a 9-4 scoring run to erase
the UWA lead. The Tigers held a
four-point lead with under a minute to
play, but TC’s Kyle Moore drained a
three-pointer to get within one before
Troutman’s basket.
UWA
posted a better shooting percentage,
connecting on 44 percent from the field,
while TC registered a 41 percent
shooting night. Both teams took
advantage of the free throw line with
the Red and White hitting 11-of-12 from
the line, while TC connected on 13-of-18
from the charity stripe. The Tigers
were credited with a season-low eight
turnovers in the setback and were
out-rebounded for the first time this
season (33-24).
Junior Jason Swanson turned in a
double-double with a team-best 19 points
and 11 rebounds. He pulled down ten of
his 11 on the defensive end of the
floor. Junior Brandon Hampton finished
with 12 points and three steals. Junior
Jamaine Nance added nine points in the
contest.
Moore led the Pioneers in scoring with
19 points.
UWA will close out
the two-day event on Saturday against
Carson Newman. Tip off is set for 1
