LIVINGSTON, Ala. —Currently
riding a three-game winning streak, the
University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team will start the second
half of Gulf South Conference action,
hosting in-state rival North Alabama in
a 7:30 p.m. contest at Pruitt Hall.
The Tigers, who closed out the
non-conference schedule last week with
wins over Wesley College and Concordia,
return to GSC competition with an eye on
one of the top five spots in the
division and a berth into the league
tournament in March. UWA started the
three-game win streak with a 73-62 win
at Montevallo on Saturday, Feb. 2. The
Lions of UNA enter Monday’s tilt also
having won their last three affairs. In
UNA’s last outing, it outlasted
Montevallo 109-99 in triple overtime
this past Saturday. UWA will be looking
to earn a season split with the Purple
and Gold, as UNA claimed the first
meeting between the two schools in
Florence, 87-66. The Tigers were led by
junior Cavin Payton in the contest with
a season-high 16 points in the affair.
During the current three-game winning
streak, the Red and White are shooting
52 percent from the field while holding
the last three foes to just 38 percent
shooting. Individually in the last
three games, four Tigers are averaging
double figures in points, led by senior
Michael Billings’ 13.7 scoring clip.
Junior guard Brian Murphy sports a 12.7
average while Maurice Naylor and Glenn
Miles carded 12 points and 11 points
respectively.
Following Monday’s
battle with UNA, the Tigers will trip to
West Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 16 and
UAH on Monday, Feb. 18.
