JACKSONVILLE,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team opened the 2008-09 campaign with a 69-48
setback to NCAA Division I foe and in-state rival
Jacksonville State on Tuesday night at Pete Mathews
Coliseum.
Defensively, UWA
(0-1) opened up in a zone defense and it proved to be
effective until the Gamecocks stated knocking down shots
to extend their first half lead to as many as nine
points on three occasions before Chris Malone drilled a
three-pointer from just past the midcourt line at the
halftime buzzer to trim the lead to 33-27 at the break.
UWA’s zone defense limited JSU (1-1) to just 36 percent
shooting in the opening period.
In the second half,
JSU’s Jeremy Bynum had the hot shooting hand, scoring
all of his 17 points in the final half. The Gamecocks
turned in a 50 percent shooting effort in the final half
and took advantage of 16 of the Tigers’ 25 miscues in
the period. JSU extended its six-point intermission
lead out to 14 points four minutes deep into the half.
UWA was outscored 13-6 over a six minute frame. Senior
Jamaine Nance led UWA in scoring with a 16 point
performance in his 38 minutes of activity. The
Huntsville, Ala. transfer from Weber State finished
8-of-10 from the free throw line along with six
rebounds. Junior Brandon Hampton added eight points in
the contest. As a team, UWA out-rebounded JSU 40-36.
The Tigers open the
home slate on Wednesday, Nov. 19, against in-state NCAA
Division III opponent Huntingdon. Tip off is set 6 p.m.
at UWA’s Pruitt Hall. The home lid lifter will be
available via live stats along with audio and video
streaming on the B2 Network. |
