GREENEVILLE,
Tenn. – The University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team suffered a 109-93 setback to Carson
Newman College on the second and final day of the
Jameson Inn Classic on the campus of Tusculum College on
Saturday.
The Eagles of CNC
(3-3) entered the weekend activity averaging 100-plus
points per contest and continued that effort against the
Tigers (2-3). The Eagles jumped out early in the first
half to mount a 21-point, 59-38, halftime advantage over
UWA. CNC pushed the deficit out to as many as 26 points
on two occasions five minutes deep into the final half.
UWA mounted a comeback midway through the second half,
trimming the Eagle lead down to single digits at 96-78
with 4:34 remaining in the contest. UWA put together a
51 percent (21-of-41) shooting effort in the second half
to claw its way back into the contest. The Tigers
out-scored CNC 55-50 in the final 20 minutes.
Four Tigers
finished in double figures in the scoring column, led by
junior Jason Swanson’s 16 points. Juniors Jamaine Nance
and Jonathan Griffin turned in 13 point efforts while
Chris Davis added 12 points in the setback. Griffin
posted a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, UWA
out-rebounded the Eagles 41-33 and has won the
rebounding battle in four of the five games played this
season.
CNC’s Joey Cameron
carded a game-high 21 points off the bench to lead the
Eagles.
UWA returns to the hardwood on
Tuesday, Dec. 2, traveling to Cleveland, Miss. to face
GSC West foe Delta State. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. at
DSU’s Walter Sillers Coliseum. |
