LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama men’s basketball
team opened the 2008-09 home schedule with a 75-61 win
over in-state foe Huntingdon College on Wednesday night
at UWA’s Pruitt Hall. The Tigers also picked up their
first win of the season after falling to NCAA Division I
opponent Jacksonville State on Tuesday night.
UWA (1-1) turned in
a 45-point effort in the second half after leading the
Hawks 30-21 at halftime. The Tigers scorched the nets
in the final 20 minutes, shooting 65 percent from the
field, including 5-of-7 from beyond the three-point
line. Junior Jonathan Griffin connected on 8-of-12 in
the period and registered 16 of his game-high 26
points. The junior transfer from Shawnee Community
College added eight rebounds and four assists in the
home opener. Junior guard Herman Mains also had the hot
shooting hand in the second period, scoring 17 of his 23
points in the frame. The McDonough, Ga.-product also
drained four treys in the period. Junior Dominique
Coleman added ten points in the 14-point win. The Red
and White opened the margin out to as many as 19 points
with 4:56 remaining in the affair on one of Griffin’s
eight baskets in the stanza. Defensively in the second
half, UWA held HC to just 35 percent shooting and
forcing eight turnovers in the final half.
David Sampleton and
Reggie Sprouse led HC (1-2) in scoring with 12 points
apiece.
UWA returns to Pruitt Hall on Monday,
Nov. 24, hosting Stillman College. Tip off is set for 7
p.m. |
