JACKSON, Tenn.
– The University of West Alabama football team got
off to a strong start Saturday and didn’t look back in
rolling to a 45-13 victory over Lambuth University at
L.L. Fonville Field.
The Tigers jumped out
to a 28-0 first-quarter lead as Tyrone Tomlin scored on
an 8-yard run to give West Alabama a 7-0 lead. Junior
quarterback James Reiter hit senior wide receiver Chris
Coach for back-to-back touchdowns – the first on a
45-yard pass play – pushing the advantage to 21-0 with
7:06 remaining in the opening quarter. Reiter ended the
quarter with a 56-yard touchdown pass to Dwiuan White to
give the Tigers a commanding 28-0 lead.
After surrendering its
first points of the season, West Alabama took a 28-6
lead into the half and came out in the third quarter
ready to put more points on the board.
After a 28-yard field
goal by sophomore kicker Mitch Warfield, the Tigers got
a running touchdown by Coach to give West Alabama a 38-6
lead. Reiter, who was 12 of 22 passing for 212 yards,
found Coach one last time for a 10-yard score, as West
Alabama had a 45-6 lead with one second left in the
third quarter.
The Tigers (2-0) had
235 yards of rushing and 212 passing for 447, while the
defense again looked solid, holding the Eagles (0-2) to
just 56 yards rushing and 188 passing for 244 yards.
Tomlin paced the
ground game for West Alabama, carrying the ball seven
times for 50 yards. Josh Jones had nine carries for 48
yards. Coach led all receivers in catches with eight for
135 yards. Senior Lewis Thompson led the squad in
tackles with seven, including an interception, while
senior Tim Kelley and junior Jacobi Avery each had five
tackles apiece
Running back Kevin
Haynes rushed 15 times for 50 yards to lead Lambuth,
while quarterback Josh Garza was 16 of 35 passing for
176 yards and one interception.
West Alabama, which
opened last season with a 2-0 mark after wins against
Concordia and Lambuth, play host Saturday, September 16
against Southern Arkansas. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00
p.m. at Tiger Stadium. |
