BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
West Alabama place-kicker Mitch Warfield was named the
Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week,
as released by the conference office on Monday.
Warfield is UWA’s
first Special Teams winner since 2003, turning in a
perfect performance in a 37-14 win at
Arkansas-Monticello. The win was the Tigers sixth of the
season and clinched UWA’s first winning season in 14
years.
The sophomore helped
post 13 of West Alabama’s 37 points versus UAM,
including three field goals. Warfield nailed a
29-yarder in the second quarter, a 30-yarder in the
third and a 26-yarder in the fourth quarter.
The Bay Minette, Ala.
native was also perfect on PATs, hitting all four
attempts and breaking the school record for extra points
in a season with 35. The old record, of 34, was held by
James Mullinax (1975) and Ben Thoma (2002).
Warfield becomes the
third Tiger to earn Player of the Week honors this
season, as Jason Riles (September 11) and Lewis Thompson
(September 18) grabbed Defensive Player of the Week
honors earlier this season.
West Alabama returns
to action Thursday, November 2nd, as the
Tigers travel to Cleveland, Miss to face the Delta State
Statesmen. The game is the Gulf South Conference Game of
the Week and will be carried on CSS and Mediacom Channel
8 and can also be heard on WZNJ-FM 106.5 or
http://www.uwa.edu/football.asp.
Kickoff between Delta State and West Alabama is
scheduled for 7:07 p.m. from Travis E. Parker Field.
