CARROLLTON, Ga.
– A late West Georgia field goal with 49 seconds
remaining in the game handed the University of West
Alabama its second-straight heart breaking setback,
falling 30-28 Saturday night at Grisham Stadium.
UWG placekicker
Jared Guberman connected on the game-winning 21 yard
field goal after the Wolves put together a 13 play, 76
yard drive to earn their first Gulf South Conference
victory of 2007. The loss for the Red and White is the
third of the season that has been decided by a touchdown
or less. In their last outing two weeks ago, UWA fell
36-35 to Harding University at home.
The Tigers (1-5,
0-4 GSC), holding a one-point advantage at the 3:59 mark
of the final period, attempted to extend the lead, but
placekicker Mitch Warfield misfired on a field goal
attempt. UWA earned the slim lead after a blocked extra
point by the Tigers after the Wolves scored on a James
Crowley touchdown pass from Ryan Poole. Poole finished
33-for-47 for 367 yards passing, including four
touchdown passes. UWA’s Cole Mason punched it in with
6:39 left in the third stanza before the Wolves trimmed
the lead to the single point. With his touchdown, Mason
has scored at least once in four of the five games this
season.
The Red and White
recorded 298 yards with the ground attack and finished
with 117 yards passing. Tyrone Tomlin paced the Tiger
charge with 116 yards rushing and a touchdown. Mason
tallied 89 yards in the affair.
UWA took an early
6-0 advantage with field goals from Warfield. The
junior connected from 28 and 25 yards. The Tigers
scored their first touchdown on the night on a 23 yard
pass from James Reiter to Dwiuan White at the 9:12 mark
of the second quarter to extend the lead to 13-0.
Reiter returned to the line up after missing the last
three games due to an injury. White’s touchdown grab
was his first of his UWA career.
The Wolves of UWG
put their first points of the game on the board on Jimmy
Howard’s 32-yard touchdown catch with 7:38 left in the
first half. UWG added another touchdown at the 1:57
mark of the half to take its first lead in the contest
at 14-13, but the one-point advantage was erased by a
Tiger touchdown with just six ticks remaining on the
first half game clock. Tomlin scampered in from five
yards out to re-gain the lead at the intermission,
20-14.
The Tigers return home on Saturday, Oct. 20, to face
Valdosta State at 7 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. The VSU tilt
will be the first of three-straight home games for UWA.
Following the UWA-VSU contest, the Red and White will
have a short week as they host Arkansas Monticello on
Thursday, Oct. 25, as part of the GSC-TV Game of the
Week package. |
