LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama dropped its
fifth-straight game Saturday, falling 37-0 to No. 13
Valdosta State University at Tiger Stadium.
The Blazers (6-1, 4-1
GSC) scored 24 points in the first half, scoring on four
of the six drives in the first 30 minutes of action.
VSU quarterback Willie Copeland scored the game’s
opening touchdown on a three-yard run at the 4:19 mark
of the first quarter. Copeland also tossed a touchdown
strike to Josh Rayam on a 51-yard scoring play. VSU
turned in 279 yards total offense in the opening half.
Copeland finished the night with 232 yards passing on 19
completions.
In the second half,
VSU took the opening kick off and drove 70 yards on
eight plays, ending with Copeland’s second touchdown
strike to Jeffery Felton for 31 yards at the 11:52 mark
of the third period. Blazer tailback Michael Terry put
the final points on the scoreboard with a two-yard
touchdown plunge in the fourth period. Terry finished
with two touchdowns on the evening and 99 total yards on
the ground. The shutout marks the second one on the
season for VSU and the first time UWA has been shutout
in a game since a 41-0 setback to West Georgia in 2005.
Freshman Terry Allen
was UWA’s workhorse in the contest. Allen, a native of
Huntsville, Ala., started at quarterback and returned
kicks for the Tigers. He closed out the first half with
104 yards on special team plays along with 88 yards
rushing. Allen compiled 266 total yards on offense,
including 143 yards on special teams. In the rushing
column, he totaled a season-high 124 yards. Allen has
now recorded over 100 yards in return yards in three
straight games, including a 216-yard performance against
Harding.
Defensively, The Red
and White had two players’ record double figures in
stops. Greg Smith finished with a game-high 12 tackles
while Alvin Garrett posted 11 tackles.
The Tigers continue
their three-game homestand on Thursday, Oct. 25,
welcoming the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the GSC-TV audience to
Tiger Stadium. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. UAM dropped
a 35-32 overtime decision to West Georgia on Saturday. |
