UWA Blanked by #13 Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama dropped its fifth-straight game Saturday, falling 37-0 to No. 13 Valdosta State University at Tiger Stadium.

The Blazers (6-1, 4-1 GSC) scored 24 points in the first half, scoring on four of the six drives in the first 30 minutes of action.  VSU quarterback Willie Copeland scored the game’s opening touchdown on a three-yard run at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter.  Copeland also tossed a touchdown strike to Josh Rayam on a 51-yard scoring play.  VSU turned in 279 yards total offense in the opening half.  Copeland finished the night with 232 yards passing on 19 completions.

In the second half, VSU took the opening kick off and drove 70 yards on eight plays, ending with Copeland’s second touchdown strike to Jeffery Felton for 31 yards at the 11:52 mark of the third period.  Blazer tailback Michael Terry put the final points on the scoreboard with a two-yard touchdown plunge in the fourth period.  Terry finished with two touchdowns on the evening and 99 total yards on the ground.  The shutout marks the second one on the season for VSU and the first time UWA has been shutout in a game since a 41-0 setback to West Georgia in 2005.

Freshman Terry Allen was UWA’s workhorse in the contest.  Allen, a native of Huntsville, Ala., started at quarterback and returned kicks for the Tigers.  He closed out the first half with 104 yards on special team plays along with 88 yards rushing.  Allen compiled 266 total yards on offense, including 143 yards on special teams.  In the rushing column, he totaled a season-high 124 yards.   Allen has now recorded over 100 yards in return yards in three straight games, including a 216-yard performance against Harding.

Defensively, The Red and White had two players’ record double figures in stops.  Greg Smith finished with a game-high 12 tackles while Alvin Garrett posted 11 tackles.

The Tigers continue their three-game homestand on Thursday, Oct. 25, welcoming the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the GSC-TV audience to Tiger Stadium.  Kick off is set for 7 p.m.  UAM dropped a 35-32 overtime decision to West Georgia on Saturday.
