LIVINGSTON, Ala.
– The University of West Alabama brought out
the fireworks for its Homecoming contest –
literally. The Tiger offense orchestrated a
new school record for rushing yards in a
game en route to a 48-10 Gulf South
Conference win over West Georgia at Tiger
Stadium Saturday night. UWA rolled up 467
yards on the ground, overriding the previous
mark of 419 against Nicholls State in 1974.
The 38-point win snaps a three-game
conference losing streak.
The scoring started early for the Red and
White, as the Tigers scored on the game’s
opening drive, closing out a ten play,
71-yard drive on Terry Allen’s first of two
rushing touchdowns in the contest. Allen,
who was inserted into the quarterback
position, tallied 176 yards rushing on 22
carries along with throwing for two
touchdowns. The yards posted by Allen is
the most by a UWA quarterback since former
Tiger signal caller James Reiter scampered
171 yards against Harding during the 2006
campaign. The Huntsville, Ala.-native’s
rushing mark ranks fourth all-time in the
program’s history for rushing yards in a
single game. Allen scored UWA’s third
touchdown of the half at the 7:11 mark of
second period to take a 21-7 advantage into
the halftime break.
The Tigers picked up right where they left
off from the opening half, posting a pair of
Dameon Baylor touchdown runs in the third
quarter. Baylor had touchdown runs of five
and 43 yards in the period to extend the
lead to 35-7. Allen’s second passing
touchdown came midway through the final
period on an 18-yard pass to Terry Levy with
4:40 left in the contest. Cole Mason closed
out the scoring on the game’s longest run of
the night, scampering 63 yards for the final
points of the game.
UWA senior placekicker Mitch Warfield became
the school’s all-time career scoring leader
with his six point after attempts. The Bay
Minette, Ala,-product surpassed John
Sedely’s (1995-97) mark of 169 points.
Warfield enters next week’s game at Ouachita
Baptist with 172 points.
The GSC’s second-best defense held the
Wolves to just 204 total yards on offense.
UWG got on the board with a five-yard
touchdown from Sean Gray to Steven Billue
with 11:26 in the second quarter. The
Wolves added a field goal in the final
period.
UWA returns to the state of Arkansas for the
fourth time this season, traveling to
Arkadelphia, Ark. to face Ouachita Baptist
on Saturday, Nov. 1. Kick off is set for
1:30 p.m.
