FLORENCE, Ala.
– The 2007 University of West Alabama football season
came to close on Saturday night with a 49-20 setback to
in-state rival and nationally ranked North Alabama at
Braly Municipal Stadium. The game marked the return of
UWA head coach Bobby Wallace to his former stomping
grounds at UNA.
The Lions (9-1, 7-1
GSC) of UNA jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the opening
quarter, scoring on its first three possessions of the
contest. UNA Quarterback A.J. Milwee connected on a
34-yard pass to Rocky Coleman on a fourth and 15 play to
post the first points in the contest. The 10th-ranked
Lions registered touchdown runs from Brandenn Pickett
and David McCants to extend the lead to a three
touchdown advantage. UWA opened the second quarter with
an eight play, 77 yard scoring drive, concluding at the
14:55 mark of the second period. Kurt Kennedy tossed a
19-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Levett to put the
first points on the board for the Red and White. UNA
extended its lead to 22 points at 35-13 with 9:16
remaining in the half. Milwee threw his second of three
touchdown passes, on an eight-yard pass to Covington
Wright.
The Tigers (1-9,
0-8 GSC) struck quickly following the UNA score with
Terry Allen’s 82-yard kick off return. The kick return
for a touchdown was his second of the season for the
freshman from Huntsville, Ala. Allen scampered 100
yards for a touchdown against Harding earlier in the
year. Allen totaled 156 yards in all-purpose yards in
the contest.
UNA started the
second half in the same fashion that it opened the game
– with touchdown producing drives in back-to-back
possessions. Milwee threw his final scoring pass of the
night with 13:44 in the third period. Joemal Campbell
caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Milwee to push the
Lions lead to 42-13. Pickett scored for the second time
in the contest with a two-yard run to close out the
scoring for the Lions. UWA put the final points on the
board on a James Reiter 30-yard strike to Anthony
Connell at the 7:03 mark of the third period.
The Tigers mustered up 326 yards on offense in the
in-state rivalry. Junior Cole Mason led the UWA ground
attack with 90 yards on 21 attempts. Kennedy finished
6-of 10 for 102 yards in the air. As a team, the Red
and White tallied a season-best 160 yards passing on 29
attempts. |
