BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama’s Octavious Sumbry was named
Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for
his efforts in the 17-14 double overtime win over
Southern Arkansas.
Sumbry registered 11 tackles in the
contest, with eight solo stops and three assisted
tackles, including one tackle for a loss of seven
yards. The Phenix City, Ala.-native also made an impact
in pass coverage, nabbing one interception and breaking
up one pass.
The freshman becomes the second
consecutive Tiger to earn the GSC Defensive Player of
the Week laurel, as Garry Pack received the honor the
week prior.
Sumbry is fourth on
the team in tackles with 21 and leads UWA in
interceptions with two on the year.
West Alabama returns to action on
Saturday, Sept. 27, as the Tigers host Valdosta State.
