In just the second overtime game in school history, the
University of West Alabama topped Southern Arkansas
17-14 in double overtime Thursday night at Tiger
Stadium.SAU had a golden opportunity to win the
contest in the first extra period but place kicker Noe’
Cuevas pushed a 35-yard field goal attempt to the left
to force the second overtime period. The UWA defense
held SAU to another three-point opportunity but Cuevas
missed from 37 yards out.
In the Tigers second extra session, they were aided
by a Mulerider personal foul that gave UWA a chance to
win the ballgame off the foot of senior place kicker
Mitch Warfield. The Bay Minette, Ala.-product drilled a
33-yard field goal to give UWA the win and push its
record to 2-2 on the season. Warfield now ranks fifth
all-time in UWA scoring laurels. The win is the first
Gulf South Conference win since a victory over Arkansas
at Monticello during the 2006 campaign. The win also
secures UWA’s first win as part of GSC-TV package.
UWA overcame a 14-point halftime deficit to the
Muleriders in the second half. The Red and White took
the second half kick off and marched 69 yards in 15
plays to put the first UWA touchdown on the board.
Freshman Terry Levy hauled in a 12-yard pass from
freshman Derek Thomas at the 6:58 mark of the second
half. The stifling Tiger defense forced SAU into punting
situations on five occasions and forced a fumble at the
Mulerider five yard line. Sophomore defensive lineman
Curtis Dawson forced the ball free and Ryan Jones
recovered the lose ball. It took UWA just one play to
even the score as Thomas connected with senior fullback
Cole Mason in the end zone.
SAU put the first points on the board on a Raphyael
Tyson one-yard rush in the opening quarter. The Blue and
Gold defense put its final points on the board on a
60-yard fumble recovery by Ryan Terry at the 3:04 mark
of the first period.
UWA returns home next Saturday, hosting top-ranked
Valdosta State at Tiger Stadium. Kick off is set for 7
p.m. VSU will host Ouachita Baptist on Saturday.
