LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama football team returns to
action on Thursday, Sept. 18, as the Tigers (1-2, 0-1
GSC) host Southern Arkansas in the Gulf South Conference
TV-Game of the Week broadcasted on CSS. Kickoff is
scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game will also be aired on
106.5-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu and streamed over the
internet on the B2 Network.
This marks the 25th
meeting between the two institutions with SAU (0-2)
leading 13-11. The two first met in 1952 with SAU
shutting out the Tigers 6-0. The Muleriders went on to
win the following two games, holding a 3-0 advantage.
UWA tied the series with wins in 1962, 1963 and 1964.
SAU returned with three straight wins before UWA put
together a six game win streak against the Muleriders.
Since the Tigers six straight wins, SAU has claimed
seven of the last eight meetings. UWA’s last victory
came in a 24-17 win in Livingston in 2006.
West Alabama
looks to snap a two-game, losing streak this season at
home against the Muleriders. The Tigers opened the
season with a 49-12 win against Belhaven College in
Tiger Stadium before dropping two straight in Arkansas
(Harding, Arkansas Tech).
Southern Arkansas
looks to get off the snide, after having a bye last week
due to inclement weather surrounding Hurricane Ike. SAU
has dropped both its 2008 contests this season, falling
at North Alabama in the season opener and against Truman
State.
Thursday’s contest
is the GSC opener for Southern Arkansas and the second
conference game for the Tigers.
Following Thursday’s
televised contest, West Alabama returns to action on
Saturday, Sept. 27, as the Tigers play host to defending
NCAA Division II National Champion, Valdosta State.
